Break down scar tissue and restore healthy movement patterns.

Overview

What Is IASTM?

A skilled intervention that includes the use of specialized tools to manipulate the skin, myofascia, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques. The instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. Generally used for inflamed tendons, muscle tightness, muscle pain, and trigger point pain.

What to Expect

Common Uses for IASTM

Using specialized stainless steel instruments, your practitioner glides along the affected tissue to detect and treat areas of restriction. Some mild redness or soreness afterward is normal as the body responds to the treatment and begins the healing process.

  • Tendinitis and other overuse tendon injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis and IT band syndrome
  • Post-surgical or old scar tissue limiting movement
  • Chronic muscle tightness and trigger point pain
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IASTM leave bruising?

The IASTM that AIT perform does not leave bruising. If the patient has sensitive skin, AIT will make a clinical decision to perform an appropriate technique that does not leave bruising.

Is IASTM the same as Graston Technique?

Graston is one brand of instrument assisted soft tissue tool. IASTM is the broader category of technique, and AIT uses specialized instruments to achieve the same goal: breaking down fascial restriction and scar tissue.

How many IASTM sessions are typically needed?

It depends on how longstanding the restriction is. Many patients see improvement within a handful of sessions, particularly when IASTM is paired with other manual therapies.
